Mobile Learning Lingo

Here are some terms and acronyms that are often thrown around in both the eLearning and mLearning communities, but not often defined.

eLearning (electronic or digital learning): educational content adapted to the digital environment or "e"lectronic environment. Learning with or through the use of computers or similar devices.

mLearning (mobile - learning): eLearning adapted to the mobile digital environment. Educational content specifically developed for use on small, portable digital devices such as iPods or PDA's.

DRM (Digital Rights Management): an umbrella term that refers to access control technologies used by publishers and copyright holders to limit usage of digital media or devices. It may also refer to restrictions associated with specific instances of digital works or devices. (Wikipedia)

PDA (Personal Digital Assistant): a very small, portable computer popular with the business & tech crowd. An example would be the BlackBerry.

CMS (Content Management System): a web application that creates a framework for a website, standardizing the site's design and allowing for non-technical users to easily edit content.

LMS (Learning Management System): a content management system (CMS) specifically designed to support educational (eLearning) activities.

Web-enabled: an electronic device that has the capabilities of accessing the Internet / World Wide Web and allowing the user to navigate with a simplified Web browser.
